Mbfitzmahan. Train Station, Lutsk, Ukraine. 1997.
This blog is based on the 25 years that I studied and wrote on Ukraine, Estonia, Georgia, and Russia. In light of the deep humanitarian crisis created by Vladimir Putin in this War, I hope to bring both a personal and scholarly perspective to the War in Ukraine.
This attack on democracy, nationalism, and international law is part of a general pattern in history and politics. I plan to turn to the 155 hours of interviews that I conducted with Soviet dissidents whose prescient insight into the future may be helpful to understand this war as well as the fragility of our democracies in the 21st century. I will also highlight questions of rule of law, the judiciary, corruption, and economics based on separate interviews conducted in Ukraine outlining and analyzing the judicial system of Ukraine.
